ON THIS DAY: So the fishing boats have started. Today was their first day out. We came across not early this morning and there was a trillion birds and a few eagles flying all about the place, it really is a
jaw dropping sight. But for me all I can think about is #thebirdsthebird #alfredhitchcock #myworsenightmare. EEEEKKKKK!
There were Orcas swimming around the boat as it was hauling up its catch and there were a number ondwhale watching / swimming boats also taking advantage of the fishing boat. We watched for a bit but left the scene, hoping we would find another pod in a more natural state.
Luckily we came across a pod of humpbacks about 30!!! Just cruising around slowly circling round in a fjord. No orcas but OMG lucky I had a hood on to keep my jaw from dropping again and again. When they came up their blows backlight from the low sunlight were golden and it was nothing short of a fountain in Vegas….. even Dubai. The golden spouts was so etheral and lasted for ages. Just magic. There was 4 mums and calves in this pod, so we waited for the calves to come up to give away their location before positioning for our drop. These calves are much bigger than the ones in Tonga these could be 6-12month old. 💙🐋
Dropping in the water was dark today as being in the fjord the mountains were blocking the light. BIUT it was spectacular seeing all these white winged angels slowly gliding by both on your left and on the right and right under. I’ve never had 30 whales in a #heatrun, this is something else. They’re just chilling out together, possibly already eaten the herring earlier that day and now have their bellies full.
On one lucky drop a mum and calf came on by so adorable. Took their breaths and moved on into the emerald green darkness.
Finally some orcas showed up and headed on straight to where the humpbacks were most likely moving for the night. First we saw 1 huge male, probable the scout / look out. Then a few more and then the mum’s and calves. Man they’re clever! So right before it got too dark we also got to swim with the Orcas. What a blessing. I’ll be putting in some #whaletokens for a bait ball and humpbacks feeding…….. #fingercrossed.
