How does photography help Conservation?   ︎

Photography plays a pivotal role in conservation efforts by fostering a deep connection between individuals and the natural world. Through my underwater images, I strive to reveal moments and perspectives that may otherwise go unnoticed, unveiling the beauty and fragility of our environment. From stunning landscapes to endangered species, my photography captures these overlooked moments, evoking awe and reverence for the planet we call home. By sharing these images, I aim to inspire viewers to become champions of conservation, raising awareness about the importance of preserving our ecosystems. Together, we can work towards a sustainable future where nature thrives. Explore my portfolio to experience the transformative power of photography in conservation.

Do you photograph other animals besides whales?

Absolutely! While I have a special fondness for capturing the majestic beauty of humpback whales, my passion for underwater photography extends to all marine creatures, big and small. From enchanting turtles and graceful mantas to mesmerizing schools of fish and elusive octopuses, I find joy in photographing the diverse array of critters that inhabit our oceans. Whether it's exploring vibrant underwater seascapes or focusing on the intricate details of tiny hermit crabs, every encounter beneath the waves is a thrilling opportunity to showcase the wonders of marine life through my lens. And it's not just underwater—dry land animals are equally captivating subjects for my lens. My love for photographing the wonders of nature extends from the depths of the ocean to the vastness of the land.

What initiatives have you been involved in to support local communities and protect marine life?

I'm deeply dedicated to safeguarding the oceans and actively seek ways to #payitforward and spread my passion for ocean conservation to others. Over the years, I've been involved in various projects supporting local communities, such as gathering and donating educational and general supplies to coastal areas.

In addition, I've participated in an extensive data collection project focusing on whale sightings, behaviors, and songs, as well as whale-swimming operations. This ongoing endeavor not only deepens our understanding of humpback whale populations but also guides best practices for Tonga's essential whale-swimming industry, ensuring the well-being of both whales and humans.

I proudly serve as an Ambassador for RainForest Rescue, an Australian non-profit dedicated to rainforest protection and restoration since 1999. Through Rainforest Rescue, I contribute to re-establishing rainforests through planting, maintenance, and restoration efforts, as well as preserving high conservation value rainforest areas, safeguarding biodiversity for future generations.

Inspired by the vision of a better future, I collaborate with Tembusu CSR to instill positive mindsets and proactive thinking in children regarding ocean pollution. Through educational initiatives, I aim to raise awareness among young minds about the critical importance of preserving our oceans and marine life. By nurturing a deep sense of stewardship and responsibility towards our planet's precious ecosystems, I believe we can empower the next generation to advocate for environmental conservation and cultivate a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world for all.

At the moment, Underwater Australiasia and Scubalamp has graciously provided me with their SUPE PRO D strobes, which I find to be excellent. I've recently authored a review of the SUPE PRO D for Asian Diver Magazine.

What kind of scuba / swimming equipment / gear do you use?

Up until a few months ago, I was still using my very first BCD, the SeaQuest Libra, which I've cherished for over 20 years. However, due to an unexpected and urgent need for replacement, I've transitioned to using Mares equipment as their availabilty is global. Currently, I rely on an Apex Black Diamond regulator set, which I greatly appreciate. Additionally, I absolutely adore my trusty Mares Volo fins. In my collection, I also have Mares BCDs and wetsuits, Apollo and WaterProof Dry Suits for colder climates, and a PoloSub open-cell wetsuit specifically for Arctic waters.

It really all depends on where I am, what needs to be done and how much luggage space is left after all the camera gear.

What camera gear do you use for underwater?

For the last 3 years it’s been the trusty Canon 5Dmkiv with a Nauticam housing. My go-to lenses are the EF16-35mm f4L and f2.8L; EF8-15mm f4L fisheye; EF24mm f1.4L and the EF100mm f2.8L Macro. I love natural light but use strobes mainly when shooting macro.

How do I get involved and help protect our oceans?

It's inspiring to see your readiness to take action! You hold immense power in your everyday choices, which can collectively make a significant impact on our planet. By embracing eco-friendly practices and cultivating a conservation mindset, you're already making a positive difference.

If you're considering supporting others in their conservation endeavors, it's crucial to ensure your efforts contribute to #RealConservation. Opt for reputable organizations like Rainforest Rescue, WWF, and Sea Shepherd, known for their impactful on-the-ground work and dedication to preserving our environment.

Before committing financially, it's wise to carefully evaluate the effectiveness of your support. Be wary of initiatives solely focused on 'raising awareness,' especially for issues already widely recognised. Unfortunately, some may exploit the term 'conservation' without implementing meaningful actions, perpetuating what's known as 'the great conservation hoax.' It's essential to scrutinise where your support goes, ensuring it aligns with genuine conservation efforts.

We all share the responsibility of raising awareness about environmental challenges, but it's vital to prioritise actions over mere rhetoric. Choose to support initiatives that prioritise #RealConservation through tangible on-the-ground projects and education. Together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future for our planet.
