ON THIS DAY: I seem to always start my blurbs with - Today or maybe yesterday .... 😬 I am currently at a loss to think of another beginning but I’ll work on it. Please provide suggestions 😁 ..... well ...... 💡
This morning (😉) in the early rising light, we swam sheltered in the shadows of the island named Hunga. It was a stunning spot to meet a Mother and her Calf with 2 Escorts. The backlit whales to me were the perfect symbolic gesture of a new day. Being able to watch them emerge as the sun rose higher seemed like a fairy tale to me. I could’ve watched them all day. I was so curious as to what would unfold with the 2 Escorts. From what we were able to observe was that the primary stood by ‘his’ mum and calf , while the 2nd Escort kept his distance BUT over the drops we had he managed to gain space edge his way closer. The 4 were so chilled moving along very relaxed, accepting each other’s company. At one point the 2 Escorts were on either side of the Mum and Calf, like matching body guards but without the thug vibe lol. The Calf was so tiny, and still creased with fetal folds so definitely less than 4 weeks old and even though Mama was dark dark grey, the colouring on the calf blended so well with the top of Mum’s back and dorsal, the camouflage was amazing. It was great to watch them slowly (whale speed slow) head out to the open ocean. Doing their thing. I haven’t been able to stop wondering how the rest of their day went. Did the Escorts have enough of each other ? Did they #tagteam and fight off any others that wanted to join their vip club? How far did they go? Did the little one have any breaching lessons? #priceless 💙🐋
